In 1986, Magers got to capture a huge event when he anchored live coverage of a tornado that was photographed and filmed by a KARE helicopter. Magers was no stranger to danger. Magers got excited when he was given a chance to cover natural disasters and major events. Magers also got involved with political events. With Gary Eichten of Minnesota Public Radio, Paul co-moderated a memorable debate between United States Senate candidates Walter Mondale and Norm Coleman.
Paul's last on air appearance of his long tenure at KARE was on December 12, 2003. He received bittersweet goodbyes from his co-workers, as well as viewers. While he was leaving KARE, he said the story that affected him the most while living and working in Minnesota was the abduction of Jacob Wetterling in 1989.
Magers parlayed his broadcast visibility into a movie role. He appeared as himself in the film A Simple Plan in 1998. Magers couldn’t be contained to just local news, he also held the national anchor desk with guest positions on NBC’s Nightly News. He also served as a substitute anchor on the weekend editions of NBC’s The Today Show in March of 2003. Magers began working at KCBS television on January 5, 2004, for a reported $2.5 million dollars. After all his experience in other states, he finally returned to his home state with a lucrative and wealthy contract. Even though he wasn’t raised in the sunny scenes of California, he would definitely get to enjoy the all of the state’s riches as a wealthy and accomplished adult.
Magers was the recipient of numerous news industry awards, including several Emmy Awards and a Golden Mike. Magers was one of Minnesota’s most beloved TV personalities and his ability to charm did not end after leaving the state. He often made people smile with some strange and funny dance moves displayed at the end his KCBS broadcasts. He lives to entertain and to bring joy to the lives of his viewers.
Magers has been married for 36 years to his wife, Kathryn. They are the parents to two daughters and share their Coldwater Canyon home with their pets. When he has time away from the newsroom and the anchor desk, Magers says he and his wife enjoy going to the movies and out for dinners. Magers claims one his biggest passions is music which may be the reason for his funny dance moves.
