Philip Hansen Anselmo, born on June 30, 1968, in New Orleans, Louisiana, is a renowned American musician best known as the former lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Pantera. He grew up in the New Orleans suburb of Metairie and attended various schools before graduating from Grace King High School. During his youth, Anselmo worked at his father's restaurant and held several other jobs, including fishing. Interviews describe him as having been a relatively introverted child.
Anselmo developed an interest in singing during his teenage years. He first gained recognition in the local music scene with the band Samhain—not to be confused with the Glenn Danzig-led group of the same name. In 1987, he joined Pantera, alongside drummer Vinnie Paul, guitarist Dimebag Darrell, and bassist Rex Brown. His presence marked a pivotal transformation in the band's sound, shifting from glam metal to a heavier groove metal style.
Although albums such as Metal Magic (1983), Projects in the Jungle (1984), and I Am the Night (1985) were released before Anselmo joined the band, he contributed to Pantera's breakthrough albums including Power Metal (1988), Cowboys from Hell (1990), and Vulgar Display of Power (1992).
In addition to Pantera, Anselmo pursued several side projects. Notably, he formed the sludge metal supergroup Down, based in Louisiana. Down's debut album, NOLA, was released in 1995 and received widespread acclaim. He also led the band Superjoint Ritual, known for its raw hardcore-influenced metal. In June 2003, Superjoint Ritual released the album A Lethal Dose of American Hatred.
Anselmo performed on the main stage at Ozzfest in 2004 with Down, solidifying his reputation as a versatile performer in the metal community. His musical ventures outside Pantera showcased his range and passion for heavy music.
