He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He went to various schools, but he graduated from Grace King High School. In Metairie. His father had a restaurant, where Anselmo worked. During his youth, he used to be an introverted child; it is mentioned in his interviews. He had many jobs during his youthful days; one of them is fishing also.

He began getting a singing interest as he's growing up, when he was a teen; he reached to connect with a band Samhain, where Anselmo earned good name inside the circle. Then, he associated with a band called Pantera in 1987, along with the members drummer Vinnie Paul, guitarist Dimebag Darrell and Rex Brown. His arrival to the band brought a change from a glam metal band to a groove metal band. He created several albums, namely Projects in the Jungle, Metal Magic in 1983 and I Am the Night in 1985.

Speaking about his affair and dating, he had a long affair with Stephanie Opal Weinstein. And, later he married her on October 31, 2001. But their relation could not survive for a long time and ended with a divorce in 2004. Anselmo is now with Kate Richardson.

Let’s know about some interesting thing and event of his life.  In 1995, he became addicted to heroin and he overdosed in 1996. Later on the overdose, he was about to die, at that time his heart stopped for five minutes.
