Robert Lewandowski was born on August 21, 1988, in Warsaw, Poland, to Krzysztof and Iwona Lewandowska. Sports were a significant part of his upbringing, as both parents were athletes—his father was a judo champion and also played football, while his mother was a professional volleyball player. His father passed away in 2005. Robert has one sister, Milena, who also pursued a career in volleyball. Contrary to some claims, Robert was not raised solely by his grandmother; he spent his childhood in Leszno and then Warsaw, where his football development began.
Lewandowski began his football journey in 1997 with the youth team of Varsovia Warsaw, not Delta Warsaw as sometimes mentioned. He later progressed through several local clubs, including Delta Warsaw, before joining the reserve team of Legia Warsaw. In 2006, he signed with Znicz Pruszków, where he played as a striker for two seasons. During his time at Znicz, he became the top scorer in Poland’s third and second divisions, scoring 15 and then 21 goals, respectively—achievements that caught national attention.
In 2008, he transferred to Lech Poznań for a reported fee of 1.5 million złoty. Before signing with Lech, he was also considered by Spanish club Sporting Gijón, though no agreement was reached. Lewandowski debuted in European competition during the first round of the UEFA Cup, scoring against Khazar Lankaran. He played for Lech Poznań until 2010 and significantly contributed to the team’s league successes.
