Rory McCann is a Scottish actor who is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Sandor “The Hound” Clegane on the HBO network’s television series Game of Thrones. Rory McCann was born April 24, 1969, in Glasgow, Scotland; his younger sister, Sally-Gay McCann works on costumes for film and television. Before becoming an actor, Rory McCann worked as a landscape gardener and carpenter and studied at the Scottish School of Forestry. Rory McCann was taught acting by Robert Parsifal Finch at The Actor’s Workshop, Glasgow, and did not start acting until he was twenty nine years old. In his first major role, Rory played a disabled personal trainer in the television series The Book Group; the performance won him the Scottish BAFTA for the best television performance of 2002.
One of his first roles was in a commercial for porridge in which he appeared in just a vest and kilt. An avid outdoorsman, Rory McCann likes to go climbing and live outdoors; he once broke multiple bones in a near-fatal rock climbing accident in Yorkshire. Rory McCann also lives a transient type of lifestyle; he often lives on a boat or stays outdoors. Rory is also a self-taught musician. He is able to play piano, guitar, banjo and mandolin and once fronted for a band called Thundersoup.
