In the early hours of October 1, 2007, Reali's apartment was destroyed by a fire. It was an incident acknowledged by Tony Kornheiser on Pardon the Interruption on the day of the fire and by Reali himself, along with various correspondents on Around the Horn. Jay Mariotti verified that no one had been injured in the fire. The fire took place a few days after he proposed to his longtime girlfriend, and now wife Samiya Edwards who works as an Africa policy consultant.

Reali gives himself credit for coming up with the names of his son and daughter; Fiorello and Fiorella La Guardia Reali. He said that he would tell them about his hilarious engagement story after they were old enough to understand. A few days later after his engagement proposal, his apartment caught fire with the insurance papers of the ring unsigned in the apartment. Everything in the apartment was destroyed.
