Vivian Dorraine Liberto was born on April 23, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas. She later became best known as the first wife of legendary country music artist Johnny Cash. Vivian passed away on May 24, 2005, in Ventura, California.

Meeting Johnny Cash

Vivian met Johnny Cash on July 18, 1951, at a skating rink in San Antonio. The two quickly formed a bond, beginning a romantic relationship that would shape both of their lives. Their courtship was interrupted when, just three weeks after they met, Johnny was deployed to Germany for a three-year tour with the U.S. Air Force. Despite the long distance, the couple maintained a strong connection through frequent handwritten letters and unwavering affection.

Marriage and Inspiration Behind "I Walk the Line"

Johnny Cash returned to the United States in 1954, and shortly thereafter, he and Vivian married on August 7 of that year. Their reunion marked the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. Cash later revealed that his iconic song "I Walk the Line," released in 1956, was inspired by his commitment and loyalty to Vivian during his time overseas.
