Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou or full name Marguerite Annie Johnson is a renowned and also an influential voice for many people. She is known to be a global renaissance woman. He is celebrated as dramatist, educator, novelist, memoirist, poet, filmmaker, historian, actress and producer. She is also a civil rights activist.  Maya Angelou was born in 1928 in Missouri. She was raised in Stamps and St Louis, in Arkansas. While growing up, she experienced racial discrimination and brutality.  However, she also developed the unshakable faith from many values of the traditional African American culture, Community and family.

Maya Angelou has a net worth of more than 10million dollars. The first book that she wrote and which she became famous for, was I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. Maya Angelou loved the arts when she was still young and she won a scholarship so that she can study in San Francisco’s Labor School.  When she was 14, she stopped to study and she became a conductor of cable car, becoming the first African American female to do so.  She went back to school and she finished high school. She gave birth to her first son Guy few days after graduation.  Since she was young and single, she had to work as a cook and as waitress so that she can support her child. However, she loved performance, dance and music and these made her to take center stage.

In 1954 to 1955, she toured Europe with the Porgy and Bess production of an opera. She did modern dance under Martha Graham and was dancing with Alvin Ailey for different reality shows.  By 1957, she recorded her album Calypso Lady.  She went to New York, where she played in Harlem Writers Guild and she acted in historic Off Broadway production at The Blacks and she did Cabaret for Freedom.

In 1960, she moved in Egypt and she was an editor of a weekly written in English called The Arab Observer. She then moved to Ghana and she taught in the school of Music and Drama of Ghana. She worked as the feature editor and for the African Review and she wrote for The Ghanaian Times.

When she was in African, she studied and she mastered Arabic, Italian, Spanish and French with Fanti: the West African Language.  While she was still in Ghana, she Met Malcom X and returned in America to help him to build an Organization for African American Unity.  She has written books, appeared in many movies and got more than 50 honorary degrees.  She worked in two presidential committees and got a presidential medal for the arts, a Lincoln medal and 3 Grammy award.

Maya Angelou is believed that she had two marriages, to Tosh Angelos  since 1951, and to Paul  du Feu since 1973.  She said the Vusumzi Make was her boyfriend since 1961 but they did not get married. However, some people say that she does not like to talk about how many marriages or divorces, she had. Only Guy is known to be her son.  She died at 28, May in 2014.
