Patricia Helen Heaton was born on March 4, 1958, in Bay Village, Ohio. She was raised as a Roman Catholic by her father, Chuck and her mother, Patricia. Her father was a sportswriter for Plain Dealer. She has three sisters named Sharon, Frances, and Alice. She also has a brother named Michael. After her high school graduation, she went to study at Ohio State University. She graduated from college with a degree in Drama. After her college graduation, she shifted to New York City and studied drama with her teacher, William Esper.

Patricia Heaton showed up in the musical, Don't Get God Started (1987). When Stage Three Productions brought one of their creations to Los Angeles, Heaton got the attention of a casting chief for the ABC show Thirty Something. She was given a role as an oncologist. Her other TVappearances include Matlock (1990), Party of Five (1996), The King of Queens (1999), and Danny Phantom (2004). She also appeared in films like Beethoven (1992) and Space Jam (1996).

She became a star when she played the role of Debra Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond in 1996. She was designated in each of the show's final 7 seasons for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, winning the award for two consecutive years in 2000 and 2001. She also gathered two Screen Actors Guild trophies and Viewers for Quality Television Awards for her work on the show. She was ranked 24th on TV Guide Network as Funniest Women on TV in 2011.

She produced the documentary, The Bituminous Coal Queens of Pennsylvania in 2005 and it was directed by her husband. She had also been a producer of William Wilberforce drama named Amazing Grace in 2006. She wrote a journal, Motherhood and Hollywood: How to Get a Job Like Mine, which was distributed by Villard Books in 2002. Heaton is the Honorary Chair of Feminists Forever, an association that restricts premature birth and embryonic foundation microorganism research and backings other expert life causes on feminism. Heaton is a consistent life ethicist and supportive of pro-life groups and causes, opposing abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty. In October 2006, Heaton appeared in a commercial opposing a Missouri state constitutional amendment concerning embryonic stem cell research, which subsequently passed. The advertisement was a response to the election of Democratic Senate hopeful Claire McCaskill and aired at the same time as Michael J. Fox's advertisement supporting the amendment.
