Wambach returned to headline the U.S. squad in the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Although the team fell short of winning, her leadership and goal-scoring kept them competitive. Unfortunately, prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she suffered a broken leg and was unable to participate. She made a strong comeback for the 2011 Women’s World Cup in Germany, playing a central role in the team's journey to the finals.
In the 2012 London Summer Olympics, Wambach scored five goals throughout the tournament, helping lead the team to gold. Her final World Cup appearance came in 2015 in Canada, culminating in a World Cup victory and cementing her legacy in women's soccer.
In 2011, Wambach also played in the National Women’s Soccer League for a team in her hometown of Rochester, New York. During the season, she sustained an injury in a match against the Washington Spirit, but returned quickly to lead her team to win a subsequent game against Sky Blue FC.
Off the field, Wambach married fellow soccer player Sarah Huffman in 2013. Huffman retired from professional soccer in 2014. As of 2016, the couple had no children. That same year, Wambach was among the highest-paid women footballers globally, with an annual salary reportedly at $200,000. Her net worth was estimated to be around $3 million.
