Born on June 2, 1980, in Rochester, New York to Peter and Judy Wambach, Mary Abigail Wambach spent most of her childhood days in Pittsford. She has six siblings, and she is the youngest among them. She did her schooling from Our Lady of Mercy High School until 1998 and was in the soccer as well as basketball tea there. Her interest in sports was first ignited at a very tender age of four.
She was selected as the National High School Player of the Year and in 1997 she was also chosen as the NCAA Regional Player of the Year. In 1996, she was selected for the under-16 national team and again in 1997 for the under-20 player pool for the Olympic Development program. She went on to do her degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville where she even got a full athletic scholarship. She helped her university team in winning their first NCAA National Championship and also led them to win Southeastern Conference Championship for four consecutive years from 1998-2001. She was also included in the University of Florida Hall of Fame in 2012.
For the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) she was chosen by the Washington Freedom in 2002. She was felicitated with the WUSA Rookie of the Year in 2002 and also led her team to victory in 2003 Founders Cup III.
In 2011, she joined the National Women’s Soccer League club in Rochester, New York and got injured in a match against the Washington Spirit in Boyds, Maryland. She recovered after skipping one match and then led her team to victory in a match against the Sky Blue. She was selected for the national team training camp in 2001 owing to her past performance. She scored her first international goal in a friendly match against Finland in 2002. In the year 2003, she was selected for the World Cup tournament where she scored three goals in her first tournament. She then went on to participate in the 2004 Summer Olympics with the national team and owing to her four goals; US was able to beat Greece and Brazil. She then went on to play in the 2007 FIFA World Cup during which she was the leader of the team. In 2008, she was selected for the 2008 Summer Olympics in China and was prevented from playing during the tournament after she broke her leg. In 2011, she went on to play her third World Cup in Germany and then in 2012, she played in the Summer Olympic in 2012 and scored five goals in the tournament. Her fourth and the last World Cup was in the year 2015 in Canada.
She is married to Sarah Huffman, who retired from professional soccer in the year 2014. They don’t have any kids until now. She is one of the highest paid women footballers in the World in 2016 with a salary of $200,000 per annum. According to her biography, her net worth is around $3, Million.
