His older brother tragically died in a car accident, and his father, whose hopes of playing professional basketball were cut short by a gunshot injury to the leg, later served time in prison for money laundering. These events deeply affected Peterson, shaping his resilience and driving him to succeed in sports. Adulthood brought further sorrow when his half-brother was killed in a shooting, and he learned posthumously of the death of his two-year-old son, Tyrese Robert Ruffin, who was fatally abused by the mother's boyfriend, Joseph Patterson.
