Alviro Petersen was born in 1980 in South Africa. He grew up in Gelvandale Township in Port Elizabeth and attended high school in the same region. During his school years, he studied alongside Ashwell Prince, who also went on to become a South African Test batsman.
Petersen began his first-class cricket career in 2001, representing the Northerns cricket team. His consistent performances earned him a place in the South Africa A team, which eventually led to his debut in the One Day International (ODI) squad in 2006. He played two ODIs against Zimbabwe during that series.
Alviro Petersen made an impactful Test debut for South Africa in 2010 against India in Kolkata, scoring a century. He became the third South African cricketer—after Jacques Rudolph and Andrew Hudson—to score a century on Test debut. He later played in a three-Test series during South Africa's tour of the West Indies and took part in matches against the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan. Despite his efforts, he did not score a century in these series and was subsequently dropped from the squad for the 2011 home Test series against Australia due to a dip in form.
Petersen signed with Glamorgan County Cricket Club for the English county season, replacing Jamie Dalrymple as captain. He emerged as the club’s top run-scorer across all competitions during his tenure. Notably, he scored a double century in a first-class match against Surrey at The Oval and was named the team's Player of the Year for his stellar contributions.
