Early Life and Education

Andrew Lloyd Webber was born in 1948 in England. He is the son of William Lloyd Webber, an organist and composer, and Jean Hermione, a pianist and violinist. His younger brother, Julian Lloyd Webber, is a renowned solo cellist. From an early age, Andrew demonstrated a strong interest in music, composing a suite of six pieces by the age of nine.

Initially, he aspired to become the Chief Inspector of Ancient Monuments in England and began studying history at Magdalen College, Oxford. However, his passion for music ultimately led him to transfer to the Royal College of Music, where he focused on musical theatre.

Musical Theatre Career

Andrew Lloyd Webber is a prolific English composer renowned for his contributions to musical theatre. He has composed 13 musicals, a Latin requiem mass, two film scores, several song cycles, and orchestral variations. His early collaboration with lyricist Tim Rice produced notable works such as The Likes of Us, based on the life of Thomas John Barnardo, and biblical musicals including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar.

His works have enjoyed extraordinary success on both Broadway and London's West End, with several productions running for over a decade. The Phantom of the Opera, in particular, is one of the longest-running musicals in Broadway history and features soprano Sarah Brightman—his second wife—in the lead role.

Really Useful Group and Artistic Leadership

Andrew Lloyd Webber founded the Really Useful Group, which has become one of the largest theatre operators in London. The company produces shows throughout the United Kingdom and licenses national tours and staged productions internationally. He also serves as president of the Arts Educational Schools London, a prestigious performing arts institution in West London.
