Early Life and Education

Andrew Stefan McCutchen was born on October 10, 1986, in Fort Meade, Florida. His parents are Lorenzo McCutchen and Petrina Swan. He has one sister. Although Andrew was primarily raised by his mother, his father, an academic, attended Carson-Newman University and remained involved in his upbringing. His parents were not married until 1992, when Andrew was eight years old. Raised in a devout Christian household, McCutchen’s faith has been a guiding force throughout his life. He initially planned to attend the University of Florida after high school but ultimately pursued a professional baseball career instead.

Draft and Minor League Career

McCutchen began his professional baseball career after being selected 11th overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2005 MLB Draft. Opting to sign with the team rather than attend college, he entered the minor leagues and had a standout season in 2006. That year, he was selected for the All-Star team of the Class A South Atlantic League and was named the Pirates' Minor League Player of the Year for his impressive performance during his first full season as a professional.

Major League Debut and Rise with the Pittsburgh Pirates

Andrew McCutchen made his Major League debut in June 2009 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In the same month, he hit his first career home run off Francisco Liriano in a game against the Minnesota Twins. By 2010, he had become the Pirates' everyday center fielder and was considered one of the team’s most promising talents. On May 14, 2010, he had a standout game against the Chicago Cubs, going 5-for-5 with five runs scored in a 10–7 win.

All-Star Appearances and Career Milestones

In 2011, McCutchen was named to the National League All-Star team as an injury replacement for Ryan Braun. The following year, he signed a six-year contract extension with the Pirates worth nearly $52 million. That same year, he finished third in voting for the National League Most Valuable Player Award. His national profile continued to rise in 2013, when he was featured on the cover of the video game "MLB 13: The Show."

In 2014, McCutchen hit his first career inside-the-park home run in a game against the Philadelphia Phillies. His exceptional play earned him numerous accolades, including five consecutive All-Star selections from 2011 to 2015.
