Anjelica Huston is an acclaimed American actress, director, producer, and author. She is best known for being part of a cinematic legacy as a third-generation Academy Award winner and for her memorable roles in films such as The Witches and The Addams Family.
Anjelica Huston was born on July 8, 1951, in Santa Monica, California. She is the daughter of renowned film director John Huston and former ballerina Enrica Soma. In 1953, the Huston family moved from California to County Wicklow, Ireland, and later settled at an estate in County Galway. She spent much of her childhood on the remote estate, while her father was often away working on various film sets.
In 1962, her mother separated from John Huston and relocated to London with Anjelica and her siblings. Huston, increasingly interested in contemporary political movements, participated in anti-nuclear protests during the 1960s. She left school in 1968, shortly before launching her acting career.
Huston auditioned for the role of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli's adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. While Zeffirelli expressed interest, her father cast her without consultation in his film A Walk with Love and Death (1969). The film received little critical acclaim, and her performance was similarly dismissed. Following the film’s release, she pursued stage acting, serving as an understudy to Marianne Faithfull’s Ophelia in a London production of Hamlet. During this period, her mother tragically died in a car accident.
Years later, Huston's career experienced a resurgence, particularly through her collaborations with director Wes Anderson. She brought her distinctive style to key roles in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), and The Darjeeling Limited (2007). She also lent her voice to Anderson’s animated feature Isle of Dogs (2018).
In 2004, Huston portrayed women's suffrage pioneer Carrie Chapman Catt in the HBO historical drama Iron Jawed Angels. She followed this with diverse roles including the eccentric mother of a sex addict in Choke (2008) and a woman coping with her son's cancer diagnosis in the comedy-drama 50/50 (2011).
In 2019, the creators of the John Wick franchise announced potential plans to add more actors from The Matrix series to the universe, following the successful addition of Laurence Fishburne. Anjelica Huston was confirmed to return to her role as "The Director" in the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), reaffirming her presence in action cinema.
Anjelica Huston has amassed a net worth estimated at approximately $50 million, a testament to her sustained success and impact in Hollywood. As a third-generation Oscar winner—her grandfather Walter Huston, her father John Huston, and she herself having won Academy Awards—she represents a unique familial legacy in the film industry.
In 1992, Huston married sculptor Robert Graham. The couple remained together until Graham's passing in 2008. Huston has no children and has kept much of her personal life private, focusing instead on her artistic contributions across film, television, and literature.
