Anna Diop is a Senegalese-American actress, best known for her portrayal of Kory Anders, also known as Starfire, in the DC Universe series Titans. She was born on February 6, 1988, in Dakar, Senegal, and immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of six.
Diop made her television debut in 2006 with a guest role on the comedy series Everybody Hates Chris, inspired by the teenage years of comedian Chris Rock. Over the years, she has built a diverse acting portfolio, appearing in a wide range of television dramas and thrillers, including Lincoln Heights, The Messengers, Quantico, Greenleaf, and 24: Legacy. In addition to television, she had a supporting role in the 2013 psychological thriller The Moment, starring opposite Jennifer Jason Leigh. Diop also appeared in the supernatural drama film The Keeping Hours.
Diop gained widespread recognition for her role as Starfire in Titans, a live-action series based on the DC Comics superhero team Teen Titans. The series centers on well-known characters such as Robin, Raven, Beast Boy, and Starfire as they fight to protect the world from various threats. Diop's performance as the powerful, alien heroine earned praise for her fresh and dynamic interpretation of the character.
Following her casting as Starfire, Diop was subjected to racially motivated backlash on social media by a segment of fans who objected to a Black actress portraying a character traditionally depicted with orange skin in the comics. These comments led Diop to limit her social media interactions by disabling comments on her Instagram account. Despite the criticism, she received widespread support from fans and industry professionals who commended her work and called attention to the importance of diversity and representation in superhero media.
