Her mom, Baroness Ella Van Heemstra, was of a Dutch ancestry, and her father, Joseph Victor Anthony Hepburn-Ruston, was born in Úzice, Bohemia, and of an English and Austrian heritage.
After her folks separated, Audrey went to London with her mom where she went to a private young ladies school. Afterward, when her mom moved back to the Netherlands, she went to non-public schools too. While she traveled with her mom in Arnhem, Netherlands, Hitler's military assumed control over the town. She had a speaking job in the 1951 film, Young Wives' Tale (1951) as Eve Lester. The part still wasn't much, so she made a beeline for America to attempt her fortunes there.
