Avan Jogia is a Canadian actor, activist, and director who was born on February 9, 1992, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to parents of British-Indian and a British-German descent. He has an older brother named Ketan who is a music producer in London. When he was in middle school, his parents pulled him out of school to homeschool him. Jogia eventually attended Killarney Secondary School but left when he was 17 to pursue a career in acting. By this time, he had already made several small television appearances. He decided to move to Los Angeles, California and give himself six months to land a role or he would go back to school. His first role was in the 2006 film "A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story". In 2008, Jogia appeared in the Nickelodeon network film "Gym Teacher: The Movie".
His six month trial period in Los Angeles was a success and he soon found he was able to make a living as an actor. In 2009 he starred alongside Victoria Justice in the film "Spectacular!". Jogia cites the British actor Tim Curry as his inspiration, he was especially a fan of Curry's role as Long John Silver in the 1996 film, "Muppet Treasure Island".
