Bella Hadid is an American model born on October 9, 1996, in Washington, D.C., and raised in Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of real estate developer Mohamed Hadid and former model Yolanda Hadid. Her father is of Palestinian descent, and her mother is Dutch. Bella has two siblings—an older sister, Gigi Hadid, who is also a successful model, and a younger brother, Anwar. She also has two older half-sisters, Marielle and Alana, from her father's previous marriage.
Growing up, Hadid and her siblings lived on a ranch in Santa Barbara, California, where she developed a passion for horseback riding. She aspired to compete in equestrian events at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro but had to abandon those plans in 2013 after being diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease in 2012. Her mother, Yolanda, and brother, Anwar, were also diagnosed with the condition around the same time.
In 2014, Bella Hadid moved to New York City to study photography at the Parsons School of Design. However, her modeling career soon took precedence. Signed by IMG Models, she began professional modeling at age 16, initially working on smaller projects before gaining prominence with high-profile brands. One of her early major runway appearances was for Tom Ford in Los Angeles.
Her modeling career quickly soared, and she became a sought-after figure in the fashion industry. In December 2016, Bella was voted “Model of the Year” by industry professionals through Models.com, solidifying her status as a top fashion model. She has since walked for major fashion houses, appeared on numerous magazine covers, and participated in campaigns for global brands.
