Louis Theroux is a British filmmaker, journalist, and broadcaster who was born on May 20, 1970, in Singapore. He is the son of Anne and American travel writer and novelist Paul Theroux. He has dual citizenship in both United States and Britain and has an older brother named Marcel who is a writer and television presenter. When he was one-years-old, Theroux moved to England with his family and spent his early years in London. He attended Westminster School where he met comedians, Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish. He also met Liberal Democrat politician Nick Clegg who he traveled to America with. When he was young, Theroux performed in several school theater productions including playing the role of Looney Bergonzi in "Bugsy Malone", an Army Officer in "Ritual for Dolls", and the Minstrel in "The Splendour Falls".
Upon graduating from Westminster, Theroux studied Modern History at Magdalen College, Oxford where he attained first-class honors. After school, Theroux began pursuing his interest in documentary filmmaking. He became known for his documentary series such as "Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends", "When Louis Met...". He also directed two BBC specials which appeared on television. He won two British Academy Television Awards and a Royal Television Society Television Award.
