He is the son of Carole Ann, a registered nurse, and Frederick Arthur Oscar Mendelsohn, a prominent medical researcher. Ben grew up with two brothers, Tom and David, and attended Heidelberg Primary School, followed by Eltham High School and Banyule High School.

He learned that his paternal grandfather came from a Jewish family, and that his maternal ancestors included convicts transported to Australia. The program also traced his heritage to 19th-century Prussia, revealing that some of his forebears were among the first Prussian Jews to settle in what is now modern-day Poland.
