Betty Liu was born in 1973 in Hong Kong. She moved to the United States at the age of three and has lived in Philadelphia since she was 12. She attended Central High School and later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1995 with a degree in English. Liu is fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese and also has conversational proficiency in Cantonese. Her interest in journalism began at an early age.
Liu's journalism career began with Dow Jones Newswires, where she served as the youngest-ever Taiwan bureau chief and regional correspondent, covering financial news throughout the region. She later joined the Financial Times as the Atlanta bureau chief, where she reported extensively on prominent business and political leaders, including the former CEOs of Coca-Cola and Home Depot.
After her time with the Financial Times, Liu returned to Asia to work as a correspondent and anchor for CNBC Asia. There, she covered market activity in Greater China and appeared regularly on morning shows, including "Squawk Box." Between 2000 and 2002, her coverage earned industry recognition for its depth and accuracy. She also contributed to the Far Eastern Economic Review and The Wall Street Journal.
