Carlos Slim is a Mexican business magnate, engineer, investor, and philanthropist who was known, for several years, as the richest man in the world; Carlos Slim is the richest man in Mexico. Carlos Slim was born Carlos Slim Helu on January 28, 1940, in Mexico City, Mexico. Carlos studied civil engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and took economics courses in Chile. Carlos Slim began his career as a stock trader in 1961; his profits, after four years of trading, allowed him to found the stock brokerage firm, Inversora Bursatil, in 1965. Carlos has been involved in innumerable types of business throughout his career, including construction, soft drinks, auto parts, telecommunications, paper, copper, hotels, insurance, and cement. In 1980, Carlos consolidated his businesses by forming Grupo Galas as a parent company of his holdings which then focused on construction, mining, retail, food and tobacco.
Carlos Slim married Soumaya Domit in 1967and they remained married until her death in 1999; the couple has six children. Carlos Slim has founded three non-profit foundations, Fudacion Carlos Slim Helu, Fundacion Telmex, and Fundacion del Centro Historico de la Ciudad de Mexico A.C; which concentrate on improving the arts, education, and healthcare in and around Mexico City.
