Bill Moyers, born Billy Don Moyers on June 5, 1934, in Hugo, Oklahoma, is an American journalist and political commentator. He was raised in Marshall, Texas, by his parents, Ruby Johnson and John Henry Moyers. Moyers began his journalism career at the age of 16, reporting for the Marshall News Messenger in his hometown.
He initially attended North Texas State College (now the University of North Texas) in Denton before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin. While at UT Austin, he wrote for The Daily Texan, the student newspaper, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism.
In 1954, Moyers secured a summer internship with then-U.S. Senator Lyndon B. Johnson. His role quickly expanded, and he was given the responsibility of managing Johnson’s personal correspondence. This early exposure to national politics would shape the direction of Moyers' future career.
Moyers later worked as an assistant news editor at KTBC, a radio and television station in Austin, Texas, owned by Lady Bird Johnson, Lyndon B. Johnson’s wife. His experiences at KTBC deepened his interest in media and communications.
Continuing his academic journey, Moyers earned a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He served briefly as a Baptist pastor in Williamson County, near Austin, before returning to public service.
In 1962, Moyers was appointed Deputy Director of the Peace Corps, where he played a significant role in the Kennedy administration’s efforts to promote international development. Following President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, Moyers became a special assistant to President Lyndon B. Johnson. He remained in that position until 1967 and was instrumental in shaping Johnson’s media strategy and policy communication.
