George Robert Newhart, professionally known as Bob Newhart, was born on September 5, 1929, in Oak Park, Illinois. He is the only son of George David Newhart and Julia Pauline. Bob grew up with three sisters: Virginia, Mary Joan, and Pauline Newhart. Of Irish and German descent, he was raised in a Roman Catholic household. He attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory School in Chicago and later earned a Bachelor of Business Management degree from Loyola University Chicago.
Before finding success in comedy, Newhart worked various jobs including delivery boy, office assistant, and advertising copywriter. He also served in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed with the 4th Infantry Division. His distinctive stammering style, dry humor, and deadpan delivery became trademarks of his comedy.
In 1960, he achieved breakout success with his debut comedy album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart. The album soared to No. 1 on the Billboard pop album chart and became the first comedy record to achieve that feat. It went on to become the 20th bestselling comedy album in history. The album earned him three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, making him the first comedian to receive this honor.
