Butch Hartman, born Elmer Earl Hartman IV on January 10, 1965, in Highland Park, Michigan, is an American animator, writer, and voice actor. He was raised in Roseville, Michigan, as the eldest of four brothers. Hartman attended Anchor Bay High School in New Baltimore before enrolling at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, California, where he studied animation.
Hartman began his professional career in the animation industry during the 1990s, working for Hanna-Barbera Productions. During this time, he contributed as an artist, storyboarder, and director on several prominent projects. Notably, he played a key role in the development of popular shows on Cartoon Network, including Dexter’s Laboratory and Johnny Bravo.
He gained widespread recognition as the creator of The Fairly OddParents, an animated series that premiered on Nickelodeon in 2001. The show follows the adventures of a ten-year-old boy named Timmy Turner and his magical fairy godparents, Cosmo and Wanda. The Fairly OddParents ran successfully until 2017 and became one of Nickelodeon's most iconic and long-running series.
In 2017, Hartman launched a podcast titled Speech Bubble, where he discusses cartoons, pop culture, and the animation industry. The podcast features interviews with notable figures in animation and voice acting, such as Grey Griffin and Jerry Trainor.
Butch Hartman is married and has two daughters, Carly Hartman and Sophia Hartman. A devout Christian, Hartman integrates his faith into both his personal and professional life. In 2005, he founded Hartman House, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting underserved communities by fighting poverty in the United States and abroad.
