Candace Owens was born on April 29, 1989, in Stamford, Connecticut. She attended Stamford High School. When her parents got divorced, Owens went to live with her grandparents.

In 2007, Owens sued the Stamford Board of Education in federal court after she received threatening racist phone calls from the 14-year-old son of mayor Dannel Malloy. Owens continued her education at the University of Rhode Island where she pursued her undergraduate degree in journalism but dropped out after her junior year.

Upon leaving college, Owens took a job for Vogue magazine before becoming an administrative assistant for a private equity firm in 2012. She eventually tried to launch her own website to expose bullies online by tracking what they post and storing it under their username. She tried crowdfunding the site on Kickstarter but the website drew criticism from both the left and the right claiming she was de-anonymizing the Internet and violating users' privacy. In 2015, Owens founded the website Degree180 which often posted anti-conservative and anti-Trump articles, some written by Owens herself.

Owens claims Anita Sarkeesian attempted to reach out to her shortly after the GamerGate controversy and when Owens declined her offer she claims she suddenly began getting inundated with trolls and her personal information was released. Owens blamed the far left and GamerGate progressives for spewing the majority of the hate she received and that is when she became a conservative.

Owens turned into a high profile conservative during the 2016 Presidential campaign of Donald Trump.
