American actor and director Charles Stanley Dutton had a very difficult life story. He was born on January 30, 1951 in Baltimore, Maryland and during all his childhood he was a reckless person. Charles did not finish middle school and left it without any desire to continue his education.
He liked boxing and with his big height and weight, he had a lot of strength. This advantage allowed him to win but subsequently led to unexpected result. In one of his fights, he accidentally killed his contestant. Charles Dutton was convicted of manslaughter and was sentenced to seven years in jail. After seven years, he came back to normal life, but his reckless lifestyle led him to another imprisonment, this time for possession of a deadly weapon. He spent another three years in jail.
It seemed that it would repeat forever, but one event has changed everything. One day in prison, he picked a random book to read and it was the book about black playwrights. This book impressed him so much, that during his imprisonment, he finally got his General Educational Development and when he was released he strongly decided to become an actor. He did not realized by that time, how talented he was it and how it will turn out.
He graduated Towson State University in the Baltimore where he studied drama. Immediately after graduation, Charles entered the Yale School of Drama. He successfully graduated and received a master's degree in acting.
In 1984, he debuted in the play Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. It was unbelievable, but this first role brought him a Theatre World Award and he was nominated on a Tony Award for the Best Actor. From 1985 to 1991, he developed his skills participating in movies and shows, mostly with episodic roles (Miami Vice, The Equalizer, Cagney & Lacey, Cat's Eye, The Murder of Mary Phagan, Apology and other).
His big success came to him in 90s, when he got the main role (Roc Emerson) in comedy-drama television series Roc, which has aired on Fox from August 25, 1991 to May 10, 1994. Such a fairy story about drastic change from a reckless guy to a wealthy person, astonishes the mind. His net worth now is about 9 million dollars. There are not much information about his private life. He does not like yellow press and gossip. It is known, that he was married once in his life. His wife was actress Debbi Morgan.
