Charles Van Zant was born in 1943 in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended Stetson University before transferring to the University of Florida, where he earned a degree in architecture in 1968. In addition to his architectural education, Van Zant pursued theological studies. He received a Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and later earned a Doctorate of Theology from Western Baptist Theological Seminary.
Following his graduation, Van Zant founded Van Zant Associates, an architecture firm which he continues to own. Alongside his architectural work, he served as a Southern Baptist minister, leading congregations at the First Baptist Church of Keystone Heights and Trinity Baptist Church. His dual careers reflect his long-standing commitment to both design and faith-based service.
Van Zant entered politics in 2008 when incumbent Representative Joe Pickens was term-limited and unable to seek re-election. Van Zant ran for Florida’s 21st District, which at the time included parts of Putnam, Marion, Northern Lake, Southern Clay, and Southern Bradford Counties. He won the Republican primary narrowly against Patricia Freeman and Christopher France, and subsequently defeated Democratic nominee and Putnam County Commissioner Linda Myers by approximately 2,000 votes.
Following redistricting in 2012, Van Zant began representing Florida’s 19th District, encompassing Putnam, Clay, Bradford, and Union Counties. He was elected without opposition for his second, third, and fourth terms, serving until the end of his tenure in the House of Representatives.
