Early Life and Inspiration

Chris Hansen was born on March 26, 1959, in Lansing, Michigan. His full name is Christopher Edward Hansen, though he is widely known simply as “Chris.”

At the age of fourteen, Hansen became intrigued by journalism after closely following the high-profile investigation into the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. In an interview with the Lansing City Pulse, he recalled how the media coverage of the case inspired his interest in investigative reporting.

Education

Determined to pursue a career in journalism, Hansen attended Michigan State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in telecommunications from the College of Communication Arts and Sciences in 1981. His academic foundation prepared him for a career that would later include some of the most significant investigative journalism of his generation.

Early Journalism Career

Hansen began his journalism career while still a senior at Michigan State University, working at the NBC affiliate WILX-TV. During this time, a prison riot broke out in Jackson, Michigan. Hansen was on-site, reporting amid fires and upheaval in the prison yard. His firsthand account gained attention, and a televised interview by the station's news director showcased Hansen’s composure and insight under pressure.

Shortly after the segment aired, Hansen received a call from the prison warden, who offered him a rare opportunity: to interview select inmates involved in the riot. This marked a milestone for the young journalist and underscored his potential in covering challenging stories.
