Basketball Career

The title of Mr. Basketball was given to him Webber in 1990-1991. Having played for the University of Michigan, Chris was the leader of the team of excellent players which included Jimmy King, Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson and Jalen Rose. These 5 players added their own tune to their game and became very popular! They were known as the “Fab Five”. They are credited for changing the game of basketball as it transitioned from the tough style of the 80s to the faster paced action of the 90s. The Fab Five merged hip hop culture with basketball by wearing baggy shorts and trash talking on the court.

Chris was drafted by the Orlando Magic with the 1st overall pick but he was traded to the Golden State Warriors for the 3rd pick, Penny Hardaway. In his first 15 years in NBA, he earned $176 million.  In February 2015, Philadelphia 76ers traded for Chris along with Michael Bradley and Matt Barnes. However, he did not complete the contract and was released. He then signed with the Detroit Pistons, which was his home team and the team which he always wanted to be a part of. He was happy that he could end his career with the Pistons.

There are several accolades to his name including NBA All Star (5 times), All NBA Team Member (5 times), and NBA Rookie of the year. He most certainly deserved all these awards. If you watched basketball during Webber’s career, there is a very slim chance that you do not know this legend. He started played basketball from his high school days. Proudly representing Michigan at the state level, he was a local hero. It was because of him that the school won MHSAA State Championship three times.

In 2013, Chris got engulfed in a scandal. A local booster paid Webber $200,000. Despite the ban, Chris continued to support Michigan, at every possible instance.

Personal Life

Webber’s childhood was not as luxurious and fancy as his basketball career. He was the oldest of the five children and lived a mediocre life in a lower-middle class dwelling in Detroit, Michigan. However, aided by his supportive parents and a few social opportunities, Webber began his journey towards becoming a basketball sensation.
