Chuck Berry is an American singer and songwriter who was born on October 18, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri. He is the youngest of four children and grew up in the north St. Louis middle-class neighborhood the Ville. He was born to his father, Henry William Berry who worked as a contractor and his mother who was a public school principal. Berry was encouraged to pursue music at an early age and he gave his first public performance while he was still a student in 1941. Berry attended Sumner High School but was arrested for armed robbery after he robbed three stores and stole a car in Kansas City, Missouri. He was found guilty of the crimes and sentenced to the Intermediate Reformatory for Young Men at Algoa. While he was incarcerated, Berry formed a singing quartet and passed the time with boxing.
The group of singing inmates became so successful they were soon allowed to perform outside of the facility. On his 21st birthday, Berry was released from the reformatory. In the 1950s, Berry worked with local bands and began taking guitar lessons from a friend named Ira Harris. He was soon performing with Johnnie Johnson's trio playing blues, ballads, and country. Berry enjoyed massive success of the next several decades until his death from cardiac arrest on March 18, 2017.
