Claudio Carlos Basso, born in 1959 in Paris, is a renowned Italian photographer best known for his evocative fashion and portrait work. Raised in a multicultural environment, Basso spent part of his early life in Buenos Aires, Argentina, before eventually settling with his family in Italy. His diverse upbringing would later inspire his dynamic and international approach to photography.
His passion for photography emerged at the young age of 14 when his mother gifted him a Russian-made replica of the classic 2¼ RolleiFlex camera. This pivotal moment laid the foundation for his future career, inspiring him to pursue photography with both artistic vision and technical precision.
As a teenager, Basso moved to Milan, one of the world’s fashion capitals, to immerse himself in the photography scene. He began his journey humbly, working as an assistant for a small stipend and residing in a studio where he often slept on the couch. His persistence and skill soon paid off.
At the age of 21, Basso received his first major break, when he was mentored by Alberto Nodolini, the then-artistic director of Italian Vogue. Under Nodolini’s guidance, Basso refined his skills and built a portfolio that would eventually grace the pages and covers of elite fashion magazines such as Italian Vogue, French Elle, American Vogue, Bazaar, New York Woman, Amica, and others.
Basso's creativity is showcased in his acclaimed photography collections, including Being the Flow and A Star and a Baby. His work is marked by a keen attention to detail and a compelling visual storytelling style that has garnered admiration from both peers and critics alike.
His book Being the Flow includes a foreword by Jennifer Blei Stockman, President of the Guggenheim Museum, who praised Basso as “a truly gifted artist who has the ability to change the way we perceive the world.”
