Clay Aiken was born as Clayton Holmes Grissom on November 30, 1978, in Raleigh, North Carolina, to Vernon Grissom and Faye Aiken Parker. His parents divorced during his childhood, after which his mother married Ray Parker. Clay has two step-siblings, Jeff and Amy, and a half-brother named Brett. Following his parents’ divorce, he adopted his mother’s maiden name, becoming Clay Aiken.
Clay developed a passion for singing at an early age and participated in several choir groups, including the Raleigh Boychoir. He attended Leesville Road High School, where he also began working with the YMCA. He later enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, studying special education. His college education was briefly delayed when he auditioned for the television show American Idol, but he eventually graduated in 2003 with a degree in special education.
Clay Aiken auditioned for the second season of American Idol while in college. Initially eliminated during the Top 32 round, he returned to the competition as a wild-card entry. He advanced to the finals and ultimately finished as the runner-up to Ruben Studdard. Following the show's conclusion, both Aiken and Studdard were signed by RCA Records.
In 2003, Aiken released his debut album, Measure of a Man, under RCA Records. The album’s lead single, “This Is the Night,” became a commercial success. The album itself achieved double Platinum certification by the RIAA, selling millions of copies nationwide.
His second release, Merry Christmas with Love (2004), also received Platinum certification and became one of the best-selling holiday albums that year. In 2006, Aiken released A Thousand Different Ways, which included several cover songs as well as original tracks that he co-wrote. His 2008 album, On My Way Here, featured original material inspired by the title track written by Ryan Tedder. However, the album received a more modest response compared to his earlier work.
