Clinton Kelly

Clinton Kelly was born on February 22, 1969, in Panama City, Panama, and was raised in Port Jefferson Station, Long Island, New York. He is a well-known American media personality and fashion consultant, best known for co-hosting the reality television program What Not to Wear, where he helped participants with fashion makeovers.

Education

Kelly graduated from Comsewogue High School in 1987. He went on to attend Boston College, earning a degree in Communications in 1991. During his time at Boston College, he served as president of the University Chorale. In 1993, he received his master’s degree in Journalism with a specialization in magazine publishing from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

Fashion and Media Career

Clinton Kelly began his professional career as a freelance writer, contributing to several fashion and lifestyle magazines. Early in his journalism career, he worked at Daily News Record (DNR), a menswear trade magazine, as an executive editor. He also served as a deputy editor at Mademoiselle, where he wrote advice columns under the pseudonym Joe L’Amour, and contributed to Marie Claire as a contributing editor.

While working at DNR, Kelly was approached by producers at TLC looking to recast a co-host for What Not to Wear. After three auditions, he was selected to join Stacy London as co-host. The show aired from 2003 to 2013 and significantly increased his profile as a fashion authority.

In 2008, Kelly made a guest appearance on TLC's reality series Miss America: Countdown to the Crown and participated in the live telecast alongside Mario Lopez. In 2011, his television career expanded further when he joined ABC's daytime cooking and lifestyle talk show The Chew, where he served as a co-host until the show ended in 2018.
