After this, he joined KMTV in Omaha situated in Nebraska as their sports reporter. He then left this work in favor of KDFW in Dallas . He then went on to leave KDFW as well and joined WFAA in the year 1983. His show premiered at 10pm right after the show of the popular sportscaster Verne Lundquist.
He grabbed the media attention in the year 1986, when he went on to report a story about the payments given to the players of a football team. This report resulted in the cancellation of the team’s 1987’s season and also helped Hansen to gain all the appreciation he deserved. He also won a Peaboy Award and duPont-Columbia Award.
In the year 1983, Hansen started working on a segment where he was made to share a heart-touching story about a child’s death and the whole video was played to the track Thank God for kids. It was this segment which helped Hansen talk about the abuse he suffered from when he was a kid. He is also known to start a scholar-athlete of the week competition from the year 1988, in which McDonald’s gives some money to the school for honoring the student who is good at sports as well as academics.
In the year 1985, he also started working for KRLD as a play-by-play announcer. He was then succeeded by Babe Laufenberg owing to conflict between him and coach Barry Switzer. He then went on to work for KTCK in the year 1990. He then went on to join KESN in the year 2006, where he hosted the show named The Hour of Hansen.
