Dan Reynolds was born on July 14, 1987, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is the seventh of nine children born to Ronald Reynolds, an author, and Christene M., a lawyer. Both of his parents are long-time residents of Nevada, and Reynolds represents the fourth generation of his family to live in the state.
At the age of 19, Reynolds served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nebraska for two years. This experience played a formative role in his life. He later wrote the song "I Bet My Life" as a tribute to his enduring and sometimes complex relationship with his parents. During this time, Reynolds was uncertain about pursuing music professionally, often associating his long hair with his hesitancy to embrace the artist’s path.
Reynolds began his college education at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he initially sought a different career. However, he soon realized that music was his true calling. While in Utah, he met drummer Andrew Tolman, and together they began forming the alternative rock band Imagine Dragons. As the lead vocalist, Reynolds helped the group gain local recognition by winning BYU's “Battle of the Bands” and other regional competitions.
Imagine Dragons released their debut album, Night Visions, in September 2012, along with their first single, "It's Time." The album became a major commercial success, remaining in the top ten of U.S. charts for three consecutive years—2012, 2013, and 2014. Night Visions earned critical acclaim, winning a Billboard Music Award for Top Rock Album and receiving a nomination for a Juno Award for International Album of the Year.
