Oz was born in 1986 to Lisa and Mehmat Oz. She was born in Philadelphia and was raised in New Jersey. She graduated from school in 2004. She has three siblings and she is the eldest, among them. She graduated from Princeton University in 2008.

She married John Jovanovic in Mahattan in 2010 at the municipal bureau of marriage. The ceremony was held after two days. John and Oz met in college and he is an investment fund analyst. Four years after marriage, Oz gave birth to her daughter Philo. A year later, she announced her second pregnancy in her show, The Chew and also revealed the gender of the baby by making John wear a blue tie. Her son was named as Jovan.

She is not just a food show host. She graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Integrative Nutrition. She received her degree in culinary arts from the National Gourmet Institute. She is very famous in social media and has many followers and fans. Apart from being a very famous TV host, she is also an author. She has written under a lot of genre. Top books of Oz are The Dorm Room Diet, Relish and others. She is also an active online writer and columnist for Glamour and Huffington Post.
