David Wright is an American former professional baseball player who played his entire Major League career with the New York Metsand was once voted as the Major Baseball League's "Face of Baseball." . David Wright was born on December 20, 1982, in Norfolk, Virginia. The son of a police officer, Wright grew up near the stadium of the Class AAA Norfolk Tides. The Norfolk Tides now serve as a farm team for the Baltimore Orioles, but when Wright was young, they were affiliated with the New York Mets. It was this affiliation that led David Wright to become a Mets fan. David Wright graduated from Hickory High School in Chesapeake, Virginia and was chosen by the Mets in a supplemental round of the 2001 amateur draft through the use of a compensation pick.
Wright showed steady progress while in the minor leagues and was awarded the Sterling award for best player in class A. He was promoted to the Double-A Binghamton Mets, then to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, and then to the majors. David Wright made his major league debut in July of 2004, playing third base. His first year, David batted .293 with fourteen home runs and forty one runs batted in. He was voted as rookie of the year by This Year in Baseball Awards. Wright went on to play third base for the New York Mets for the next thirteen years. In 2012, David Wright was awarded a seven year contract extension valued at one hundred and thirty eight million dollars.
