Dawn Richard was born on August 5, 1983, in New Orleans, Louisiana. She grew up immersed in a musical and artistic environment. Her father, Frank Richard, was the lead singer of the funk band Chocolate Milk, while her mother owned a dance studio. Growing up, Dawn spent much of her time at her mother’s studio, where she learned both singing and choreography—laying the groundwork for her future in the entertainment industry. She has one sibling.
During her teenage years, Dawn performed with a local band named "Realiti." Her talent was noticed by Kemic A. during a live performance in New Orleans in 2004. Soon after, she signed a recording contract under the name "Dawn Angelique" with producer Octave Anderson Jr. through his independent label Yeah! Brother Records. Together, they recorded the album Been a While, which featured Dawn both in group collaborations and as a solo performer. She also toured regionally to promote the album.
Around this time, she was balancing her education at the University of New Orleans while also working as a cheerleader for the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets.
Dawn auditioned for MTV’s reality television series Making the Band in 2005. Her successful audition led to her becoming one of the founding members of the girl group Danity Kane, formed under Bad Boy Records, owned by Sean "Diddy" Combs. The group’s name was officially announced on June 14, 2006, and they quickly rose to fame with their debut album reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Danity Kane was slated to release a comic book in 2009, but the group disbanded in early that year due to internal disagreements. In 2009, Dawn began working with another of Diddy's musical ventures, the group Diddy-Dirty Money. She appeared in several of their music videos and projects, including portraying the character “Money” in the video for “The Way You Love Me.”
