Family and Early Life

Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Shapovalov is the son of Tessa and Viktor Shapovalov. His mother, Tessa, was a former member of the Russian national tennis team. Amid the dissolution of the Soviet Union, she immigrated with her husband to Tel Aviv, where Denis was born. The family later moved to Canada, where Denis began his tennis training.

Rise in Professional Tennis

Shapovalov began gaining international attention in 2017 when he reached the semifinal of the Canadian Open (Rogers Cup) at just 18 years old. During that tournament, he remarkably defeated tennis greats Juan Martín del Potro and Rafael Nadal, showcasing both skill and resilience on the court.

He continued his strong form in 2018 by reaching another Masters 1000 semifinal—this time at the Madrid Open. On May 21, 2018, Shapovalov became the top-ranked Canadian male tennis player, reflecting his steady ascent in the ATP rankings. His highest ATP singles ranking to date is No. 10, which he achieved in September 2020, surpassing the previously noted peak of No. 23.

As a junior, Shapovalov reached a career-high ITF junior ranking of No. 2. His most notable achievements in the junior circuit include winning the Wimbledon boys' singles title in 2016. The year prior, in 2015, he claimed the US Open boys' doubles title with fellow Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime, cementing himself as one of the top young talents in international tennis.
