Lemon's career has not gone without controversy as he was named on a list of "worst journalism of 2014" by The Columbia Journalism Review for his remarks on the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Lemon hypothesized the plane's disappearance might have been a supernatural event. He was quoted as saying, "Especially today, on a day when we deal with the supernatural. We go to church, the supernatural power of God. People are saying to me, why aren't you talking about the possibility — and I'm just putting it out there — that something odd happened to this plane, something beyond our understanding?"
In 2014, Lemon interviewed journalist and music publicist Joan Tarshis about her allegations against comedian Bill Cosby. Tarshis was one of the many women to accuse Cosby of sexual assault. During her interview, Lemon not only asked why she didn't approach law enforcement sooner but also suggested that she should have bitten Cosby as a way to stop the attack from continuing potentially. Lemon said, "You know, there are ways not to perform oral sex if you didn't want to do it ..." implying the use of teeth. In 2015, over 30,000 people signed a petition to fire Lemon from CNN because of a controversial remark he made regarding aggressive police behavior and the use of excessive force on a teenage black girl. Lemon defended his comments by saying that journalists are supposed to gather all possible information. When he addressed the aftermath of The Washington Post's report about President Donald Trump referring to Haiti, El Salvador, and African places as "shithole countries," Don Lemon opened his show by saying, "The president of the United States is a racist. All of us already knew that. Those comments are frankly disgusting. There's another language I'd like to use, but we are on television. But you know what, they're not shocking, not even shocking because this is who Donald Trump is—this is what he thinks."
In 2006, Don Lemon received an Emmy Award for his report on the real estate market of Chicago. He went on to win three more Emmys for his reporting in Africa, and was also awarded an Edward R. Murrow Award for his coverage of the capture of the DC Area snipers. Lemon has also received numerous awards for his reporting on the AIDS epidemic in Africa and Hurricane Katrina. In 2009, he was voted one of the most influential African Americans by Ebony magazine.
