Drew Brees was born on January 15, 1979, in Austin, Texas. He attended Westlake High School, where he excelled in football, baseball, and basketball. As the quarterback for the Westlake football team, Brees led them to a perfect 16–0 season and a state championship, earning the title of 5A Offensive Player of the Year in Texas.
After high school, Brees attended Purdue University, where he studied Industrial Management at the Krannert School of Management. A dedicated student-athlete, Brees was also a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. On the field, he became one of the most celebrated quarterbacks in Purdue history. He led the Boilermakers to a Big Ten Championship and an appearance in the 2001 Rose Bowl, their first since 1967.
Brees set numerous records during his collegiate career, including 13 Big Ten records, 2 NCAA records, and 19 Purdue University records. Notably, he accumulated 11,792 passing yards, 1,026 completions, and 90 touchdown passes—setting a Big Ten record in the passing category at the time.
Drew Brees was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft. Initially considered an unconventional choice due to his 6-foot stature, Brees proved his critics wrong. He became the Chargers' starting quarterback in 2002 and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2004 after a standout season, during which he led the team to the playoffs and was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
Despite his success, the Chargers were hesitant to commit long-term due to a serious shoulder injury he suffered late in the 2005 season. As a result, when Brees became a free agent, the team chose not to re-sign him.
