Duane Chapman

This was only the beginning of Duane Chapman and his teams legal troubles though. The three bounty hunters were not released right away, as bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico. While sitting in a Mexican jail, Chapman and his bounty tracking team were first denied bail, but once Duanes wife Beth found out about the bail denial, and alerted the media in the US. Once the story of the bounty hunters being kept captive in a Mexican jail spread, the Mexican police were pressured to grant bail, and they did just that. Once out on bail, the Chapmans attorney gave the opinion that they should just flee the country and return to the United States, so that is what they did. This act, made them international bail jumpers and wanted fugitives by the Mexican police.

Things were quite for the Chapmans initially, but in September, 2006, just days before the statute of limitations on their crimes in Mexico were to expire, Duane Chapman and his son Leland, along with Tim Chapman were arrested by Marshals from the United States and jailed in Hawaii on the request of the Mexican government. They were charged with deprivation of liberty under Mexican law, which is similar to kidnapping in the United States. These charges were very serious, and the Mexican government attempted to get the Chapmans extradited back to Mexico for sentencing on their charges.

On the 15th of September 2006, the Chapmans showed up in court with shackles around their ankles. While the judge did show mercy and allow the three to leave jail with bond being paid, he did order that they be required to wear electronic ankle monitors to keep track of where they went at all times.

After a number of delays in the court proceedings, the Chapmans were finally released with all charges dropped. As after a very large media campaign in the United States, and the support of many Senators and Congressman, a Mexican federal judge came down with a verdict that there was no reason to try the three in federal court. As of November 5th, 2007 the Chapmans have had all charges dropped completely.
