A.J. McLean was born on January 9, 1978, in West Palm Beach, Florida, United States. His full name is Alexander James McLean. He is the son of Denise and Bob McLean. A.J. has a diverse ethnic background—on his mother's side, he is of Cuban and German descent, while on his father's side, he has Scottish, Irish, and English ancestry.
His parents divorced when he was four years old, and his mother was granted full custody. In 1990, he moved with his mother and grandparents to Kissimmee, Florida, where he began focusing on his singing and acting career. McLean appeared in several Nickelodeon and Disney productions during the 1990s, including roles in GUTS, Hi Honey, I’m Home!, and Welcome Freshmen.
