Early Life and Background

A.J. McLean was born on January 9, 1978, in West Palm Beach, Florida, United States. His full name is Alexander James McLean. He is the son of Denise and Bob McLean. A.J. has a diverse ethnic background—on his mother's side, he is of Cuban and German descent, while on his father's side, he has Scottish, Irish, and English ancestry.

His parents divorced when he was four years old, and his mother was granted full custody. In 1990, he moved with his mother and grandparents to Kissimmee, Florida, where he began focusing on his singing and acting career. McLean appeared in several Nickelodeon and Disney productions during the 1990s, including roles in GUTS, Hi Honey, I’m Home!, and Welcome Freshmen.

Backstreet Boys Era

In 1993, A.J. McLean became a founding member of the Backstreet Boys, alongside Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, and Brian Littrell. The group quickly rose to international fame and became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, gaining massive popularity throughout the 1990s and 2000s. The Backstreet Boys are widely regarded as a cultural phenomenon of their era.

In order to pursue their music careers, A.J., along with Littrell and Carter, left high school but continued their education by hiring tutors while touring. Their commitment to education alongside global stardom reflected the group’s early dedication to personal growth and professional excellence.
