Alfred Joel Horford, known professionally as Al Horford, is a Dominican professional basketball player. He was born on June 3, 1986, in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. His father, Tito Horford, was a former professional basketball player and notably one of the first Dominicans to play in the NBA. Horford’s mother, Arelis Reynoso, worked as a journalist. Inspired by his father’s career, Al developed a passion for basketball from an early age.
Horford spent his early childhood in the Dominican Republic before his family relocated to Lansing, Michigan, in 2000 when he was 14 years old. He attended Grand Ledge High School, where he became the standout player on the school's basketball team. Horford set several school records, including most career points scored. In his senior year, he was named Class A Player of the Year. He also played AAU basketball with the Michigan Mustangs, a team that made an impressive run in the Adidas Big Time national tournament, falling just short of winning the title.
In 2004, Horford committed to the University of Florida, joining the Florida Gators men’s basketball team under head coach Billy Donovan. He quickly became a central figure on the team, helping the Gators win the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Tournament in 2005.
Horford and the Gators entered the 2006–2007 season with momentum from their previous championship campaign. Despite missing several games in December 2006 due to an injury, Horford returned in time for crucial matchups. In the NCAA Championship game against Ohio State, he contributed 14 points and seven rebounds, helping the Gators secure their second consecutive national championship. Horford was one of only four players on the team to surpass 1,000 career points.
Horford realized his dream of playing in the NBA when he was selected as the third overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2007 NBA Draft. He signed his rookie-scale contract with the Hawks on July 9, 2007, reportedly valued at $17.5 million over four years. Standing 6 feet 10 inches tall and known for his all-around skills, Horford became an immediate asset. He started in 77 out of 82 games in his rookie season, averaging around 10 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. He earned NBA Rookie of the Month honors four times during the 2007–08 season and participated in the Rookie Challenge during All-Star Weekend, where he scored 19 points, finishing second in scoring.
Horford continued to improve with the Hawks, helping the team reach the playoffs. In the 2008–09 season, the Hawks defeated the Miami Heat in the first round but were then eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
On November 2, 2010, Horford signed a five-year, $60 million contract extension with the Hawks. However, he suffered a significant shoulder injury on January 11, 2012, which limited him to only 11 regular-season games that year.
On December 24, 2011, Horford married former Miss Universe Amelia Vega. The couple welcomed their first child, Ean Horford Vega, on February 23, 2015. As of 2014, Horford's net worth was estimated at approximately $17 million, reflecting his earnings from NBA contracts and endorsements.
