Alfred Joel Horford, known professionally as Al Horford, is a Dominican professional basketball player. He was born on June 3, 1986, in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. His father, Tito Horford, was a former professional basketball player and notably one of the first Dominicans to play in the NBA. Horford’s mother, Arelis Reynoso, worked as a journalist. Inspired by his father’s career, Al developed a passion for basketball from an early age.
Horford spent his early childhood in the Dominican Republic before his family relocated to Lansing, Michigan, in 2000 when he was 14 years old. He attended Grand Ledge High School, where he became the standout player on the school's basketball team. Horford set several school records, including most career points scored. In his senior year, he was named Class A Player of the Year. He also played AAU basketball with the Michigan Mustangs, a team that made an impressive run in the Adidas Big Time national tournament, falling just short of winning the title.
In 2004, Horford committed to the University of Florida, joining the Florida Gators men’s basketball team under head coach Billy Donovan. He quickly became a central figure on the team, helping the Gators win the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Tournament in 2005.
Horford and the Gators entered the 2006–2007 season with momentum from their previous championship campaign. Despite missing several games in December 2006 due to an injury, Horford returned in time for crucial matchups. In the NCAA Championship game against Ohio State, he contributed 14 points and seven rebounds, helping the Gators secure their second consecutive national championship. Horford was one of only four players on the team to surpass 1,000 career points.
