Horford realized his dream of playing in the NBA when he was selected as the third overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2007 NBA Draft. He signed his rookie-scale contract with the Hawks on July 9, 2007, reportedly valued at $17.5 million over four years. Standing 6 feet 10 inches tall and known for his all-around skills, Horford became an immediate asset. He started in 77 out of 82 games in his rookie season, averaging around 10 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. He earned NBA Rookie of the Month honors four times during the 2007–08 season and participated in the Rookie Challenge during All-Star Weekend, where he scored 19 points, finishing second in scoring.

Horford continued to improve with the Hawks, helping the team reach the playoffs. In the 2008–09 season, the Hawks defeated the Miami Heat in the first round but were then eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

On November 2, 2010, Horford signed a five-year, $60 million contract extension with the Hawks. However, he suffered a significant shoulder injury on January 11, 2012, which limited him to only 11 regular-season games that year.
