Alexander Richard Pettyfer, known professionally as Alex Pettyfer, was born in 1990 in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England. He is the son of Lee Ireland, an interior decorator, and Richard Pettyfer, an actor. He has a younger half-brother, James Ireland, a junior tennis player, from his mother’s marriage to property developer Michael Ireland.
Pettyfer began modeling at the age of seven, starting with a campaign for Gap. He later appeared in advertisements for various products, including yogurt brands. A significant early moment in his career was meeting designer Ralph Lauren in a New York toy store, which led to further modeling opportunities. He appeared in his first commercial at just six years old.
As a schoolboy, Pettyfer participated in numerous theatrical productions, taking roles such as Willy Wonka in a staging of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk, and playing parts in adaptations of Robin Hood. He was educated at several independent schools, including The Mall School in Twickenham and Lambrook Haileybury in Berkshire. He later attended Millfield School in Street, Somerset, and Shiplake College in Oxfordshire. Upon completing his GCSEs, he enrolled at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London to further pursue acting.
Pettyfer gained widespread fame in 2006 after portraying the titular role of Alex Rider in the film adaptation of Anthony Horowitz's novel "Stormbreaker." For his performance, he was nominated for both a Young Artist Award and an Empire Award. His rising popularity led to modeling gigs, including campaigns for Burberry.
He continued to build his film career with lead roles in "I Am Number Four" (2011), a science fiction action-adventure, and "Beastly" (2011), a modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Pettyfer further expanded his résumé by appearing in "Magic Mike" (2012), where he played a young stripper opposite Channing Tatum, and in a supporting role in Lee Daniels’ historical drama "The Butler" (2013). He also starred in the romantic drama "Endless Love" (2014).
Alex Pettyfer has attracted media attention for his personal relationships and distinctive tattoos. Among his tattoos is a Celtic cross on his right chest and an intertwined heart and initials "ER" on his inner arm, which stands for "Elizabeth Royal" and is not connected to his former girlfriend Emma Roberts. He dated Roberts briefly after they met while filming "Wild Child" (2007). Other notable relationships include a reported engagement to actress Dianna Agron between 2010 and 2011, as well as dating Dutch model Marloes Horst.
Pettyfer has maintained a public presence with followers across social media platforms like Instagram, Tumblr, and Twitter. As of recent estimates, his net worth is approximately $3.5 million.
